A visual guide of RGB and hexadecimal colors

Hex color codes are three byte hexadecimal number, with each byte, or pair of characters in the Hex code, representing the intensity of red, green and blue, respectively.

W3C color names, hex and RGB values

W3C color names are names assigned by the W3C to specify colors in web pages or files. These names can be used instead of their corresponding hexadecimal value to refer to that color in an HTML file or CSS stylesheet. These names are supported by all modern web browsers and used because it's easier to remember color names than color codes.

RGB or HEX

RGB Color Codes
RGB gets its name from the primary colors; red, green, and blue. Traditional color theory dictates that all other colors can be derived from combinations of these three.

The format used is rgb(A, B, C): A is how much Red, B is how much Green, and C how much Blue.

Values are entered in decimal digits (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... etc.) from 0 which is the lowest intensity of a color, to 255 which represents the highest intensity:
Black: rgb(0, 0, 0) | White: rgb(255, 255, 255)

The three primary colors, red, green and blue, are obtained by mixing the highest intensity of the desired color with the lowest intensities of the other two:
Red: rgb(255, 0, 0) | Green: rgb(0, 255, 0) | Blue: rgb(0, 0, 255)
Hex Color Codes
Hex color codes use the same principle as RGB color codes, but are written in a different way, values are expressed in pairs of hexadecimal digits: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E, F.

The format used is #RRGGBB: RR is how much Red, GG is how much Green, and BB how much Blue.

Hex code byte values range from 00, which is the lowest intensity of a color, to FF which represents the highest intensity:
Black: #000000 | White: #FFFFFF

The three primary colors, red, green and blue, are obtained by mixing the highest intensity of the desired color with the lowest intensities of the other two:
Red: #FF0000 | Green: #00FF00 | Blue: #0000FF
Variation of colors
To create grayscale colors use equal intensities of each color, ie. #454545 or #999999

Generally speaking, the higher the numbers, the lighter the color, and the lower the numbers, the darker the color.
Create lighter colors
If you would like the make the color lighter: adjust the values that are not being used.

If you are changing two values, they will need to be adjusted evenly to make sure to keep the same color tone.
Create darker colors
If you would like the make the color darker: adjust only the values that are being used.
